My career in modeling has taken me to exotic locations, opened my eyes to a wide variety of fashions, and given me the opportunity to wear couture pieces by designers both up-and-coming and internationally recognized. However, nothing compares to the elegance, sophistication and timeless beauty of bridal couture. I have been fortunate to work with bridal labels ranging from Eddy K (Milan), Jasmine (Chicago), Rosa Clara Bridal Couture (Spain), House of Broel and Old New Blue Vintage Bridal (who provided Kate Middleton's wedding night lingerie) and in countless fashion editorials, catalogs, advertisement campaigns, etc.
In the past, bridal dresses were expected to be traditional, simple and somewhat safe, but lately something exciting has happened in the world of bridal couture: Companies are offering wide arrays of stunning colors and unconventional cuts/styles. Choker collars, racer back gowns, crystal embellishments and tiered trains are becoming increasingly popular for brides who wish to be showstoppers on their big day. There's absolutely nothing wrong with traditional dresses, but it is exciting to see bridal couture evolving so rapidly.
As a model, I have worked personally with dozens of international bridal labels and it is both intriguing and exciting to speak with them one on one about the design process, what inspires them and what they look for when requesting models.
When Rosa Clara, the force behind her namesake brand, booked me as a headlining model in her showcase at Miami International Fashion Week, I was over the moon to walk for someone whose work I had admired since I was a child. She said the reason she cast me was because I struck her as someone who could embody the look/style of any gown in which she fitted me. It is vitally important as a model to be able to complement the vibe of the garments you wear. And now that bridal companies are offering more edgy, avante garde garments, it is even more essential for models to be total chameleons.
Getting to model the 2016 collections before they hit the stores is exciting, and take it from me: Bridal Couture is becoming a tour de force in the fashion world -- and the new season promises not to disappoint.
