POST WRITTEN BY NICOLETTE HOUSE FOR CSW

Spring and summer wedding season is upon us! We’re heading into the time of year when our mailboxes are chock full of save-the-dates, shower invites, and wedding invitations. From traditional envelopes to invites being delivered in elaborate boxes, there are always new and unique ways to let your guests know about your special day. CSW caught up with Melissa Mizel, proprietor of Dear Emily, a by-appointment retail studio offering a fabulous selection of invitations, announcements and other stationery for life’s special events in Winnetka, to learn about spring’s newest stationery trends.
Mizel explained that two of the most recent and insanely cool developments in the stationery business, laser cutting and foil stamping, are popping up on invitations from showers, to weddings, to birthday parties.

“Laser cutting uses state-of-the-art technology to create pierced, often intricate designs that overlay the printed layer of an invitation. For instance, it can give the impression that the invitation has a band of lace on top of it,” said Mizel.

Laser cutting allows couples to create cool designs to place on their invitations. It can also lend itself to giving off an elegant and upscale vibe to any invitation or save-the-date.

In contrast, foil stamping adds pizzazz and glitz for those looking to spice up their stationary designs. It’s great to use if your wedding has an art deco or Gatsby-ish theme.

“Foil stamping adds a glittery, metallic effect. The most popular colors are gold, copper and silver, but the stamping can be done in many colors. Aqua and magenta are popular, too,” said Mizel.

While laser cutting and foil stamping trends towards a higher price due to labor costs, Mizel pointed out that couples could still make their invitations stand out by using artisanal papers with graphic designs or rubber stamps. Digital printing also allows for more creative designs on invites and for a rainbow of colors to be used.

Mizel shared some fabulous tips for couples picking out their stationery, as well. When ordering stationery, it’s important to count the number of envelopes you need versus the number of people on your guest list. Remember, each envelope will probably be addressed to more than one person on your list.

“You’ll be sorry if you outrageously over-order your invitations,” said Mizel, who usually recommends a cushion of 20-25 extras.

Mizel noted that your invitation is the biggest clue into what type of wedding reception you are throwing. She urges couples to have a clear idea of what type of reception they’re having before they begin selecting stationary.

She also advises couples to come up with a list of words to describe what they want their invitations to look like. She recommended they start with a list of adjectives such as romantic, clean, sophisticated, ornate and build their invitation style from there.

“Couples should also know what impressions they want their invitations to convey and pick a style that suits them personally as a couple,” said Mizel.

In addition to laser cutting, foil stamping, and using artisanal papers, couples can rely on typography to convey the tone of their wedding and to make their wedding invitation distinctive. Couples looking for a romantic and softer vibe can use a script font and calligraphy on the envelope to set the mood.

Whatever the vibe of your wedding, there is a stationary trend that is perfect for you. Specialty shops like Mizel’s help couples decide what elements best fit each couple’s personality and personal style. Selecting invites and save-the-dates is a great time to get your creative juices flowing and create something that is truly exceptional and memorable.
