We met downtown Chicago in the fall of 2008 on the dance floor of a former club/ bar in Fulton market by the name of BonV. As young professionals, weekends were the best time for both of us to get out and enjoy a beautiful fall night in the city. We quickly exchanged phone numbers that night and went our different ways. It was not until February of 2009 that we really started dating and getting to know each other. As result of our continuous hanging out, we decided it made sense to begin a relationship.
After our engagement, it was clear that we both wanted a winter wedding, an all-white theme while snow was still on the ground and that’s exactly what we got! We wanted to give our friends and family something to look forward to in the midst of our brutal Chicago winter. Our wedding was action-packed and included the best of both worlds: Traditional and modern. We wanted to make sure we incorporated elements that are consistent with our origins and beliefs.
For the ceremony, the Kensington room at the Oak brook Hills Resort was completely transformed to our flavor: A beautiful pleated, sheer white backdrop with fairy lights adorned the back of the ceremony altar, lighted flower white pedestals lined each side of the aisle. All seated on white chairs, our guests witnessed our heartfelt vows to each other. It was a fairy tale in a winter wonderland! As a couple, the white color symbolized our pure commitment to each for years to come.
We walked into the reception to the sound of Coldplay's “Sky Full of Stars,” both holding sparklers to our 200 guest all on their feet, welcoming us in this amazing all-white decor. The surprise I (Mo) had been working on for all of my guest is finally here. Africa is here and this is where Muntu Dance Theater of Chicago performed African rituals and energetic dances for the audience and us. As a drummer, I was also invited to join the circle of rhythm. The crowd went crazy as we expected. We wanted our guests to taste a piece of Africa and they got exactly that. We celebrated all night long and danced to the sound of JOJO & GIZEP. We were lucky enough to have the staff at the hotel allow us to host an after-hour session at the hotel lobby. We celebrated until 5 a.m.! This day will be remembered as the wedding of a lifetime and the memories we created are timeless.
